The course catalogue

All courses offered at TU Berlin are listed in the course catalogue, the Vorlesungsverzeichnis. It is always published a few weeks before the beginning of the semester and can be bought for 3 Euro in the Unishop. In addition to the printed version you can also find a course catalogue on the net.

All courses are listed according to faculties and departments.

Next to the title of the course and a brief description of its content you will find the course number (e.g. 0150 L 10) as well as an abbreviation for the course type.

Some departments also publish so called Kommentierte Vorlesungsverzeichnisse where all courses are described in detail. Please have a look here.

You may also look for courses by using the following search option.

In case the catalogue for the upcoming semester is not available yet, you should refer to those for past semesters. The changes from one summer semester to another or from winter semester to winter semester are usually very small.

Language of Instruction

Most lectures are given in German. Exchange students should therefore have some notions of German in order to be able to study at TU Berlin or should attend the intensive German courses offered at TU Berlin.

For those of you that do not speak any German at all: There is, however, also a growing amount of courses offered in English. Please search for all courses given in English online.

You may also have a look at the following lists:

English courses offered in the Winter semester 2009/10 (PDF, 174,4 KB)

English courses offered in the Summer semester 2009 (PDF, 275,3 KB)

English courses offered in the Winter semester 2008/09 (PDF, 1,1 MB)

English courses offered in the Summer semester 2008 (PDF, 247,8 KB)

Last but not least, TU Berlin offers also a few Master programs that are entirely taught in English. For a list please have a look here.

Course types

The most important types of instruction at TU Berlin are Vorlesungen (VL - lectures), Übungen (UE - Exercices), Seminare (SE or HS), Integrierte Veranstaltung (usually consisting of VL and UE), Projekte and Praktika (practical courses).

Course guidance and advice

Should you need advice in choosing the individual subject areas, please contact your coordinator. A coordinator is a professor at TU Berlin who is responsible for the exchange with the partner university in a specific subject area. Some of you may already have heard the name of your coordinator. If this is not the case, you can also contact the Akademische Auslandsamt.  Furthermore, each department has its own advisory office where you can also receive advice and a Kommentiertes Vorlesungsverzeichnis.

Registration for courses

In general, you do not have to register for a course as this is done during the first week of lectures. You simply attend the first session being held.

If, however, courses do require a prior registration, this will be stated in the course catalogue. You will also find information on where and when the registration takes place.

Architecture Students
The presentation of the projects in the department of Architecture as well as their allocation takes place a week before the lectures begin.

Course confirmation and Transcripts

You will get a confirmation - a so-called Schein - for each single course you have successfully attended. Normally you receive a Schein when one or more written tests and/or oral examinations have been passed or a seminar paper or report has been written. You may take the Scheine back home to be recognized by your home university.

Please not that you are NOT automatically awarded a transcript at the end of your period of study at TU Berlin.

If you would like to receive a record of all your courses and achieved grades listed on one single and official paper instead of taking home a pile of Scheine, you can fill in the data on the transcript form provided by the AAA which you can find here.

Please have the course information (SWS / ECTS, course title and grades) signed and stamped by the respective lecturer or, if you present all your Scheine, by the AAA.
